Just a few minutes away from one of the busiest European motorways, lies the Karst (the Kras in Slovene) - a fascinating, sparsely populated region which an adventurous traveller should not overlook.
The Karst is interesting due to its underground caves, its rocky slopes steeply descending into the Adriatic Sea and its water-carved rock formations which, surprisingly, provide a habitat to astonishingly diverse animal and plant species. The dynamic karst landscape is criss-crossed by endless pathways, which visitors can stroll freely to view the man-made terraces, stone enclosures and other architectural particularities. The karst valleys are renowned for the unique flavour of their produce, which is grown on red soil known as terra rossa. Over the span of centuries, the Karst has been marked by a variety of cultures, but its people have remained warm and hospitable.
